WHO WE ARE
"And there are those who have little and give it all. These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty. There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward."
–Kahlil Gibran
Native Sons Literacy Project is a dream realized by Keith LaMar, an incredible human wrongfully held in solitary confinement on Ohio's death row. Indeed, even while fighting his own case, Keith felt inspired to do something righteous with his life. He knew that books had saved him, that the words and wisdom of people who had come before him had helped steady his heart and heal his mind. Keith knew he could reach back to other young people in peril through books and help guide them to more hopeful paths, and, thus, he officially set Native Sons into motion in 2016.
Keith summoned a group of talented friends and contacts from many walks of life to help bring Native Sons to high school and college classes and juvenile detention facilities. He recruited donations of books and sold his own paintings to help cover the costs. Together, we have a diverse range of qualifications and experiences to offer as Native Sons mentors. We are: lawyers, teachers, community organizers, mentors, authors, musicians, marketers, members of marginalized communities, returning citizens, social justice activists, grant writers, coaches, law enforcement officials, college students, parents, and more.
